Need help with Hayden

Reid Rosefelt

aka Tiger the Frog
I'm working on a piece with Hayden and like the voice, but for the life of me, I can't get him to say "twen," the first half of "twenties." Actually the first two-thirds, as the "twen" is two notes. Tweh ehn. Sometimes you can't even hear the T.

I have tried to make this work dozens and dozens of times and have fooled with all the settings, and tried many phonemes. There are probably tricks I don't know. I'd love to hear your suggestions.

I use Synthesizer V as a tool for songwriting, so Hayden is not going to be used in the final version, his part will be resung by me or another human. But it bothers me because I've never had this problem with any of the other voices. The song is a duet, and the Solaria part is good enough to use, and was an absolute breeze to program.

I do like Hayden a lot, though, aside from this one syllable.

I had this problem with all the female singers singing "between" and it was the same "tw" sound that was problematic The answer was not what I was expecting. It had to do with the way that syllables ran into each other, and the tempo of the song, just made it such that one syllable was masking another. The way I got round it was to alter the timing (using the timing/phonemes panel, not the piano roll itself - that didn't work), of the syllable BEFORE the one I was having trouble with. So the problem was the "tw" sound, so I changed the timing on the "be" syllable, and it completely fixed the problem. The change was so minimal that it didn't affect delivery of the line at all. The situation isn't exacly the same, but I suspect it is the same issue, so try changing the timing using the timing panel, of the syllable before the one you're having trouble with, even though in your case, its a different word. Might take some tweaking to get it where you want, but the point is, that the answer is not always to work on the problematic syllable itself, but the ones around it.

I can't wait to try this. Yesterday I pulled the Hayden and Solaria vocals into my song. They both sound so good except for that one "twenty," which kind of ruins the illusion of a real singer. Otherwise quite decent and I haven't done all my final tweaking yet.

Thank you!

Many times it's enough to increase the strength of the phoneme in the note panel. If that doesn't help, you can edit the phonemes of the syllable adding an extra /t/. This action often helps to force the aspiration of the consonant. Depending on the context you may need to adjust the length of the added phoneme.

In the screenshot (using Natalie), notice the aspiration of /t/ in the second "between" waveform:

As @richiebee said, sometimes it's a matter of editing the duration of the previous phoneme in the previous note.
