A Scottish violin, by Frank Aitchison, Gattonside, Melrose, 1943

Aitchison - front   Aitchison - back

Of fine materials and good, honest workmanship throughout, this fiddle has been worked all its days and has matured nicely. Tonally broad, strong and versatile, it is very well balanced and responsive. A true joy to play, it seems to 'know all the notes', as a professional player said of it recently.

The back, neck and ribs are of well-figured, matching sycamore, the one-piece belly of straight, medium grain pine, narrowing slightly to the treble side...new fittings of best-quality ebony. All in all, a very handsome violin, of great character, covered with good quality brown oil varnish on a pale ground.
