Music that makes you cry

I always thought this was a beautiful song, but the full emotional impact didn't hit me until I learned the backstory. Briefly... a young 20-something Jackson Browne was recording in England in the early 1970s, and staying at a vacant house. A young woman was also temporarily staying there, and over the next few days, she and Browne became close. But soon, she left to travel to Morocco, and Browne never saw her again.

The song is a beautiful expression of those deeply meaningful but fleeting encounters we occasionally have in life, especially in our youth when we're wide open to all possibilities. Plus the scenario has a very late 60s/early 70s vibe to me, that I find quite nostalgic, and when I'm in the right mood, this song can bring a sentimental tear to my eye.

Although Jacob Collier's music interested and impressed me, it often left me a bit emotionally indifferent. But this recent piece moved me.

so its said a good deal of people can't go through this song without a tear in the eye. nah...i made it easily. but last 30 seconds talk to the soul, and it was a good move to switch 4/4 to 3/4 and 4/4. if you want to give your soul a strawberry, just pass it to 2:50 and let it run 40 seconds.

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen)

Joy Division - Atmosphere

Green Day - Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here

Samuel Barber - Adagio For Strings

It's very good, if his voice was good, this would get near highest marks. It's great it isn't, bcs this would raise jealousy.

(to fix this issue, he needs destiny and harshness in the voice, so he should be thrown in a prison in Africa for 2-3 years, with a daily bottle of whiskey, and then let's check the voice after that. Would be unbeatable track.)

Played this and 5 other of my favorite songs at my moms funeral 3.5yrs. It really moved me at the time and continues to move me today. Heh, I'll never forget my brother's face when I asked if I could please select some of the music. Apparently most of the family associates my music taste with death metal.

The artists who have moved me to tears the most frequently during my lifetime would have to be:

  • Peter Gabriel
  • Kate Bush
  • Greg Dulli (Afghan Whigs/Twilight Singers/Gutter Twins/solo)

I second that emotion. One of the first songs I learned when that album came out.

Here is one of my favorite tunes that gets me every time. The other tunes and artists have been mentioned by others. That being Johnny Cash, Hurt, and Eva Cassidy, Over the Rainbow. Warren Zevon wrote this after his diagnosis and knew the end was near. He gathered the troops for one last recording session with friends like Jackson Browne, Springsteen and others.
