What's new

Arbitrary Decisions by Moderator

There's a lot of talk in this thread about what should be included and talked about on the forum, and in particular the sort of content that annoys and folk would rather not see.

I get it. But I also need to stress - and I hope Mike and the rest of the mods realise this - that VIC is literally the only place that some of us (possibly a majority?) get to talk about this stuff.

And I really do mean that. I have a nice life: Family, children, friends. But not one single "real person" in my life knows what the hell I'm on about when I talk about a legato transition. When I'm excited about a new release, there's no-one to share that excitement with over a beer. When BBCSO came along, there wasn't a person in my "real" life who understood the importance of that release to a British bloke, raised on the BBC with an interest in tinkering with virtual instruments.

If you're involved in the industry, live in London or LA and get to discuss this stuff outside of forums, I'm very envious. I can't think of any other profession or hobby where the only place some of us can discuss our excitement about dropping £500 on a new toy is on a forum to a bunch of avatars.

And it's why a get a little antsy when the terms of the conversation are discussed. If the enthusiasm of hype thread wears you down, for example, please remember that for some of us it's the only space where we can actually talk about this shit.

Yes, there are other online spaces. But none quite like this. Just wanted to put this out there. A x
The irony for me is although my posts seem to side on reducing chit chat, I also in general prefer to keep enabling it. Earlier in the thread, I was just trying bridge the gap with others here who want to find certain technical discussions easier among all of casual discussions. I think there are ways you can organize threads in the forum that would still serve both aims.

I agree that we don't want to lose how welcoming vic is to all types of individuals who are passionate about virtual instruments and just want to excitedly post updates and commentary on various libraries. It's what gave me the courage to start posting here to begin with.

I don't think any of us disagree with you on this, and for the record, I like speculation threads, too ... when the interest is organically there. The ones I don't like are when certain people create "conversation starter" threads just for the sake of starting a conversation with their name at the top of the thread. (We've all seen that pattern from the same "certain people," right?)

What I (and I believe most others) are specifically thinking about as problematic are posts like kgdrum just made, which then lead to Bee responding with a clever quip, and ... if it didn't happen so often, it would be cool, but we've seen that particular exchange play out a hundred times and it gets tedious.

I personally like clever quips, mind you, and we certainly don't want to eliminate all of them (I thought R.G.'s was pretty funny), but too many are repetitive, like how many more times do we need to see "A new strings library? Better check Muziksculp's pulse!"?

Again, for almost everyone here (certainly including Alex), you shouldn't change anything about your posting habits. The changes I'm hoping to make are more surgical, rather than sweeping.

Thanks for the clarifications, Mike. Much appreciated.
