What's new

Newb question. So is VI-Control what Northern Sounds used to be?

I remember NS as well.
I liked the online Study of Orchestration.
I think I found NS in the first place after looking for a bug fix - don’t remember what broke.
I liked the place but I left it years before it collapsed.

Here's a zip with everything I downloaded-

It's sort of janky but it works. Wonder if it's worth doing it again here on VIC?

Thanks, but that's not the site, that's someone's lessons on orchestration or something.

I was hoping to download a better res Rick Catsbarf avator, that's all.

I was a pretty regular contributor to the Garritan section of NS back in the day - FWIW Garritan was my gateway drug to using orchestral samples… combined with Finale Human Playback it was a pretty amazing step up in expressiveness (and a lot better than GM sounds). I even worked with Gary when he decided to release a set of organ samples - he reused some of my sample content from my very first Hauptwerk set, and he and one of his programming fellows (Tom?) asked a lot of questions about the organ… I met them both at NAMM one year.

Gary was a good friend, and he had the vision to make orchestral samples affordable to the masses - I think he deserves a lot of credit for that vision, and I’d probably not be still messing with VI if I hadn’t initially gotten in on the Garritan samples when I was strapped for cash.

I did several of the audio examples for the Rimsky-Korsakov orchestration project Gary spearheaded, that was my pleasure and I am proud to have contributed.

Once Gary sold to Makemusic, things got weirder and weirder on NS, and I finally bailed after submitting to the annual Christmas Album and getting a snarky response from the one guy who seemed to have ultimate control over it…. I tried to poke my head back in a few times, but it had lost its camaraderie and was no longer the same fun place it had been.

VI has been a breath of fresh air, and reminds me of the best parts of NS (with even better features, too).

I’m glad to be here, and this has become a regular place to interact and get good info. Thanks, Mike.

Perhaps using a Musescore/Musesounds based web player.
I found some people who've put together Scheherazade in Muscscore (3). It sounds...okay. I wonder if the MIDI/ VST mapping updates will make it easier to have a more realistic performance without too much programming.

Hehe. Ill just get some popcorn and see where this goes…
I miss sparring with @Nick Batzdorf but he usually beat me up and frustratingly we mostly agree on everything as it turned out.

He was a very talented and sweet guy, also involved in new sampling techniques and if I remember well also contacted by VSL when it was a startup (we chatted about this stuff with him in our #midi-mockup IRC channel, getting several of us banned from NS, several times, because they thought we were conspiring against them).

I remained distantly connected via FB and once set up a fundraiser for his then dog Bella, who needed an eye operation. His last years were troubled, he got homeless and his occasional Facebook posts got more and more confusing and puzzling. I heard he died peacefully in his sleep, so not what I had come to expect. But I can't remember how I heard about this and how accurate it is...

He was a really nice guy.
Wait. Ash is gone?

That's so sad. I hadn't heard.

That means you have good taste.

But what am I supposed to be fighting about? I missed it.
Sorry, I just meant the teasing and kibitzing we used to do. I miss it. Ya Ape! Remember, I made you the Pope! :)

As for the topic, as most know, I used to be a moderator on NS. It was great and I enjoyed everyone there (most are here now). I don’t want to get too specific or name any names, but I was very fond of the owners of NS. I was one of the last ones to bail out hoping it would resolve in a better way than it did. I must say that I got the impression that the owners were being manipulated. Many times (again, as some of you know) I tried to advocate for people - arguing that they should NOT be banned but in the end they were. Usually the banning were done by other moderators, but the last straw for me was when I was asked to ban certain people. I was given reasons that turned out either not to be true or for reasons that have been already mentioned previously. I was put in a very difficult position and felt that I was now an extension of the manipulation. So I was out. For me it was a tragedy for both NS and a lot of good people. I loved the forum and it‘s members so much but it got to the point where I could not defend the indefensible. It felt dishonest. But, (again this is my opinion) it was the owners who were lied to as well.
It was a long time before I joined here because I didn’t know if I would be welcomed but I very much was. I am so thankful to be among my friends again. I think a lot (if not most people) knew what was going on and the difficult position I was in and that I really was trying to do the right things.

I remember you contacting me privately saying they made you ban me and you hated doing it. I never held it against you. Glad I recognize you here now, Mike can I ban Brian?…kidding.

VI-Control was started as a place to go when Northernsounds began falling apart.
Yes. I created it for many reasons. The first of which was that it really bothered me that composers (let’s face it, many composers are gentle intuitive beings) were being regularly abused at NS. In response, I wanted to create a safe haven for composers to hang their hat and speak freely in the name of better mock-ups without the additional political tension created by developers who at the time wanted to nix any honest discussion that shed an uncompromising light on their products.

Yes I agree. Ashif was brilliant yet quite misunderstood by his own family. I will miss his uncompromising wit and humor.
